Barcoding and Medication Safety

Medication in a ready-to-administer format with a readable barcode on the unit-of-use supports patient safety and helps the right medication reach the right patient, in the right dose.

Barcodes also improve traceability, particularly if medications have been altered by a pharmacy production process and are no longer in their original manufacturer's format. If the manufacturer has included a barcode on the unit-of-use, however, there is no need for additional manipulation in the hospital pharmacy, thereby decreasing risk and increasing productivity.
